I have only recently joined e-bay auctions (about a month ago), but already am pleased with the service and both the items I have purchased and the sellers I have purchased them from.

Payment methods are determined by the seller, so vary, but I have paid all of my sellers by postal order so far, which seems to be a widely accepted method of payment, as do personal cheques. Some sellers take credit cards, but not all.
